The Mother Geneva Johnson Academy, named after the late mother of the school’s overseer, has continually enrolled grades K-12 students who were labeled “non-achievers”, “truants” and “disciplinary problems”. Most of students have been raped, molested and in foster care. The school's mottos are that “Every Child Is A Star” and “We Believe That Every Child Has The Right To Succeed, It Is Our Duty To Make It Happen”. These same students that were given up on are now college –bound and college-enrolled students.
The Mother Geneva Johnson Scholarship was established by Mother Geneva Johnson Academy alumni, Whitney Sumpter in recognition of the academy’s importance, power, and purpose in the Alcolu, SC community and the growth of the students that come through its arms. It is an annual scholarship given to a Mother Geneva Johnson Academy graduating senior planning to attend a four year university with the purpose of recognizing and fueling his/her progression toward a destined positive future.
The Mother Geneva Johnson Scholarship will be a monetary award of $250.00.
